As of February 2011 when LRI
operations were suspended
| LRI initiatives focus on Closing The Learning Divide for under-prepared and/or economically disadvantaged pre-college and college students. LRI will build upon the proven and highly successful methodologies developed by Dr. Steve Truch who has diagnosed and treated reading and math deficiencies for over three decades and established The Reading Foundation (Calgary, Canada) in 1990. Dr. Truch’s Discover Reading, Discover Meaning, and Discover Math Programs markedly and quickly enhance the skill levels of students struggling in these areas. LRI is on track to develop a prototype clinic around Dr. Truch’s programs and administer the clinic to small groups of students. Dr. Truch’s experienced trainers would train new instructors who, upon completing their training, would participate in a 2011 summer practicum under the tutelage of Dr. Truch’s trainers.|
As reflected in the “Approach” and “Outcomes” pages of this web site, such a Model Clinic was proposed and the early stage development approved in partnership with the Whitacre College of Engineering at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX in spring 2011. This innovative training and instruction clinic model would have been the first such in the United States in summer 2011. Students would have been selected based on diagnostic testing to identify those with high potential, but who were struggling with learning process weaknesses in reading, reading comprehension and understanding of math concepts. All students would have participated in an intensive six-week intervention program. Unfortunately, a dramatic budget cut in state funding for higher education in Texas resulted in the termination of our contract to actually implement this model program in 2011. On very short notice, efforts to find last minute funding were not successful and LRI day to day operations were suspended in spring 2011. LRI has retained its status as a 501c3 corporation and plans to resume operations in December 2017.
